Global challenges such as the shortage of skilled workers, migration, climate change, and economic transformation have an immediate impact at the municipal level. Dr. Joy Asongazoh Alemazung therefore understands international cooperation not as abstract foreign policy, but as a concrete task for municipalities.
His international work is shaped by the conviction that municipal cooperation and partnerships can make a central contribution to sustainable development – through knowledge transfer, institutional exchange, and cooperation on equal terms.
Dr. Alemazung is committed to expanding and deepening municipal cooperation and partnerships, particularly between cities and municipalities in Europe and Africa. The focus is not on symbolic encounters, but on practice-oriented cooperation – for example in the areas of administration, education, skilled workers, business, and sustainable urban development.
As mayor, he brings the perspective of municipal practice into national and international networks and advocates for municipalities to be taken seriously as active actors in international cooperation.
Dr. Alemazung has organised several international conferences and is a regular participant and speaker at international conferences, expert forums, and panel discussions. There he represents the municipal perspective on topics such as migration and development, governance, skilled worker recruitment, and partnership-based cooperation between the Global South and Europe.
He brings together academic expertise, political experience, and his personal international biography – as a mediating voice between different political, cultural, and institutional contexts.
Through his professional and academic career as well as his international experience, Dr. Alemazung sees himself as a bridge builder between municipalities, national politics, international organisations, business, and civil society.
The goal of his international cooperation is to develop local solutions for global challenges and to strengthen municipalities – in Germany as well as in the international context.
